Stichting The New System Brassband

“From an unconscious choice we made something successful” At the age of 16 Klebert began to live his passion for music. Now, twenty years later, the name “The New System Brass” is known all over the Surinamese music industry. Rightfully called “one of the best brass bands” which Suriname has known. “I never thought that The New System Brass would be so successful. A band that consisted of just a few individuals, grew to more than 100 members into two different groups; New System Youth Brass Band and Brass Band System. With young people from different neighborhoods, such as Flora, Tamenga, Kasabaholo, Van Dijk, Friman Gron, Abra Broki, Beekhuizen and Zorg & Hoop, it was shown that if you utilize your talent alone, you can reach some of your goals quick, but with the right guidance and the group you can get much further. It started as a hobby, but in three years it became so great that a foundation was founded. With the aim of providing talented young people with the opportunity to develop themselves through dance and music.

“Klebert’s music career began when he was just eight years, with an invitation from Patrick Fullington – son of the famous singer Jules Fullington – to come play in their Drum, Drum Corps Suriname. From the age of eight to sixteen, he was a member of several marching bands, and learned to play almost every instrument. He also took part in the majorette group The Switch. “After the age of sixteen, he never played an instrument anymore; he took the lead in the newly created New System Brass Band.

The New System Brass band was known for their unique style of music namely Kabula which made them earn their tracks on national and international level. For example, The New System Brass band worked with renowned artists including Damaru, King Koyeba and Cyriel (Cyriel & The More Love Band and many others.

During the annual AVD event of 2011, we went home with the first prize! That same night The New System Brass band held its last performance, which was a rather sudden end due to, we were exhausted and we had reached our target at national and international level, it was not that exciting anymore.

Then the idea was that we would do electrical brass, but it cost a lot of money, and we had reached our ceiling. Then Six months later a new child of The New System Brass Band was born, one of the youngest drummers Luciano Becker was not yet ready to end his music dream. He got permission from Drenthe to take the instruments to launch a “new” band, which from that day until now exists under the name “OG Brass Band.

During the last Su Music Awards, Klebert received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the music industry in Suriname. The New System Brass band doesn’t exist anymore, but the memories remain forever.”
